The reading test: points and strategy
By the end of this lesson you can find the right place in the text for each question, split your time and complete a text with gaps.
5 min · Level A2+
Read the question, find the place in the text, compare carefully. The questions usually follow the order of the text. Before you start, split your time and keep a few minutes at the end to check. If a wrong answer costs no points (read the instructions), answer every question.
In texts with gaps look at two things: grammar (il or la, singular or plural, the verb tense) and the meaning of the sentence. Also read the sentence after the gap.
Watch out for the small words that change everything: non, solo, anche, tutti, entro, prima di.
CILS: 40 minutes, 12 points. Task 1: 12 pieces of information, present or not present in a text, 0.5 points each. Task 2: 6 gaps with 3 options, 1 point each; gap 0 is an example. One idea: 25 minutes, then 12, then 3 to check. A wrong answer scores 0, like a blank one: it costs no points, so answer everything.
CELI: reading and writing share 2 hours: you decide the time for reading. 4 tasks: short texts with multiple choice, information in a set of rules, a text with gaps and options, a text message with gaps and no options.
PLIDA: 40 minutes, 4 parts, 18 questions: multiple choice with 4 options, people to match with ads or services, paragraphs to insert into a text, headlines to match.
CERT.IT: 4 tasks, 30 points: a text with gaps and 4 options, multiple-choice questions on different texts (including rules and articles), true/false. Listening, reading and writing are one single 90-minute block.

Common mistakes
✗ Leggo tutto il testo tre volte e poi non ho tempo per le domande.→ Leggo il testo una volta, poi cerco il punto giusto per ogni domanda.
Time is short. The questions tell you where to look: use them as a guide.
✗ Nel testo c'è la stessa parola della domanda, quindi è vero.→ Nel testo c'è la stessa parola, ma controllo tutta la frase.
An identical word is not enough: non, solo or prima di can change the meaning.
✗ Nel testo con spazi scelgo la parola che conosco meglio.→ Nel testo con spazi controllo la grammatica e il significato.
Often all the options are familiar words: the sentence decides, not the most familiar word.
