The writing test: what the examiner rewards

By the end of this lesson you know what the examiner looks for in a written text, how to use your time and what to check when you reread.

5 min · Level B1

The examiner rewards a text that does the task: it answers all the points in the instructions, uses the right register (Lei in a formal email, tu with a friend), and is clear and correct. A simple, correct text is worth more than a difficult text with many mistakes.

For each text: read the instructions carefully, make an outline (your ideas in order), write, and keep about a quarter of the time to reread.

CILS: 40 minutes, choose 1 topic out of 2, 80-120 words. A plan: 2-3 minutes to choose, 5 for the outline, 20-25 to write, 8-10 to reread. 12 points: efficacia comunicativa (doing the task) 3, adeguatezza stilistica (register) 1, correttezza morfosintattica (grammar) 4, adeguatezza e ricchezza lessicale (vocabulary) 3, ortografia e punteggiatura (spelling and punctuation) 1.

CELI: 3 tasks, all compulsory, with strict limits: 4 short answers of 8-15 words, a formal email of 40-50 words and an informal message of 80-90 words. Count your words.

PLIDA: 60 minutes, 2 texts: one of 110-150 words and one of 70-100. Careful: a text with fewer words than the minimum is annulled.

CERT.IT: 2 short texts of 50-80 words (for example a message or a complaint), 10 points each, in the 90-minute block with listening and reading.

Common mistakes

✗ Scrivo frasi lunghe e difficili per fare bella figura.→ Scrivo frasi semplici, chiare e corrette.

Difficult sentences bring more mistakes. The examiner rewards a clear, correct text.

✗ Rispondo solo al primo punto della consegna.→ Rispondo a tutti i punti della consegna.

If one point is missing, the text doesn't do the whole task, even if it is correct.

✗ Gentile signora, come stai? Ti scrivo per...→ Gentile signora, come sta? Le scrivo per...

Gentile signora is formal: then continue with Lei (sta, Le). Don't mix tu and Lei.

Scrivi al direttore della scuola di tuo figlio. Come cominci?

Un testo semplice e corretto vale di solito più di un testo difficile con molti errori.

La consegna chiede: spiega il problema, chiedi un appuntamento, ringrazia. Il tuo testo spiega il problema e ringrazia. Quale punto della consegna manca?

CILS: quante parole deve avere il testo?

CELI: quante parole deve avere l'email formale?

PLIDA: un testo più corto del minimo di parole viene annullato.

CERT.IT: quanti punti vale ogni testo?
