The speaking test: what the examiner rewards

By the end of this lesson you can answer and develop your answer, keep the conversation going and ask for repetition when you don't understand.

5 min · Level B1

Answer the question, then develop it: a reason and an example. Don't answer only sì or no.

The examiner wants to hear that you can communicate. Use the past when you tell a story and linking words (perché, però, quindi, per esempio). Keep talking even if you make a few mistakes. Don't learn a long text by heart: the examiner notices, and the text doesn't answer their questions.

If you don't understand, ask in Italian: Scusi, può ripetere? or Che cosa vuol dire...? It is normal in a conversation.

CILS: about 10 minutes with one examiner. A presentation of about 1 minute, then 2-3 minutes of conversation on a topic chosen from 4, with follow-up questions. The test is recorded and marked in Siena. 12 points: efficacia comunicativa (making yourself understood, answering) 4, correttezza morfosintattica (grammar) 4, adeguatezza e ricchezza lessicale (vocabulary) 3, pronuncia e intonazione (pronunciation and intonation) 1.

CELI: 10-12 minutes, 5 parts with 2 examiners: presentation; 2 photos chosen from 4; comparing Italy and your country; short explanations on civics (Constitution, rights and duties); a role play with 30 seconds to prepare.

PLIDA: about 15 minutes. First 2 minutes of warm-up, not scored; then an interaction and a monologue of 3-4 minutes each, each with about 3 minutes of preparation.

CERT.IT: about 10 minutes, 3 parts worth 10 points each: interview questions, a face-to-face role play and a role play as a voice message.

On the page

  • Scusi, può ripetere la domanda?

Excuse me, could you repeat the question?

  • Sì, mi piace, perché il mio quartiere è tranquillo.

Yes, I like it, because my neighbourhood is quiet.

  • Per esempio, la domenica andiamo al parco con i bambini.

For example, on Sundays we go to the park with the children.

  • Non so la parola, ma è una cosa per aprire le bottiglie.

I don't know the word, but it's a thing for opening bottles.

  • Allora, vediamo... secondo me il treno è più comodo.

Well, let's see... in my opinion the train is more convenient.

Common mistakes

✗ «Le piace il suo lavoro?» «Sì.»→ «Le piace il suo lavoro?» «Sì, molto, perché i colleghi sono gentili.»

With one word the examiner can't hear your Italian. Add a reason or an example.

✗ Imparo a memoria un testo lungo e lo dico tutto.→ Preparo idee e frasi utili e rispondo alle domande.

A memorised text doesn't answer the examiner's questions, and the person listening to you notices.

✗ Non capisco la domanda e rispondo a caso.→ Non capisco la domanda e dico: «Scusi, può ripetere?»

Asking for repetition is normal; a random answer often has nothing to do with the question.

Check yourself

«Che cosa ha fatto lo scorso fine settimana?» Qual è la risposta migliore?

Se non capisci una domanda, puoi chiedere all'esaminatore di ripeterla.

All'orale è meglio dire un testo lungo imparato a memoria.

CILS: tra quanti temi scegli per la conversazione?

CELI: quante foto descrivi?

PLIDA: il riscaldamento iniziale di 2 minuti non ha un voto.

CERT.IT: quale parte c'è nella prova orale?
