Mio, tuo, suo... and questo, quello
By the end of this lesson you can use possessives with and without the article and choose the right form of questo and quello.
5 min · Level A2+
The possessive usually takes the article: la mia casa, i miei documenti. With family nouns in the singular there is no article: mia madre, mio marito, sua sorella. The article comes back with the plural (i miei figli), with loro (il loro figlio) and usually with an adjective (la mia cara nonna; but with maggiore and minore it is also fine without: mia sorella maggiore).
With mamma and papà you often hear the article: la mia mamma, il mio papà. The possessive takes the gender of the thing or person that is owned, not of the owner: Ahmed e sua moglie, Fatima e suo marito. When you write to someone formally with Lei, you often use a capital letter: il Suo documento.
Questo = near the speaker; quello = far away. To find the form of quello, think of the article: il → quel, i → quei, gli → quegli. On its own, without a noun, you say quello, quelli: Quale borsa? Quella.

Common mistakes
✗ Mia casa è vicina alla scuola.→ La mia casa è vicina alla scuola.
In Spanish you say mi casa and in Portuguese often minha casa, with no article; in Arabic the possessive is part of the word (bayti). In Italian, with things, you need the article: la mia casa.
✗ La mia madre lavora in ospedale.→ Mia madre lavora in ospedale.
In Portuguese people often say a minha mãe, with the article. In Italian family nouns in the singular, with no adjective, have no article: mia madre, mio fratello.
✗ Fatima e sua marito abitano al secondo piano.→ Fatima e suo marito abitano al secondo piano.
In English his or her depends on the owner (her husband). In Italian the possessive follows the person or thing owned: marito is masculine, so suo marito, even for Fatima.
✗ Quelli ragazzi sono i figli dei vicini.→ Quei ragazzi sono i figli dei vicini.
Before a noun, quello changes like the article: i ragazzi → quei ragazzi, gli amici → quegli amici. Quelli is used on its own: Quali ragazzi? Quelli.
