A, in, da: where you are, where you go
By the end of this lesson you can say where you are, where you are going and where you come from with a, in, da, di and per.
5 min · Level A2+
In Italian the preposition is the same for where you are and where you are going: Sono a casa (I'm at home) / Vado a casa (I'm going home); Abito in Italia / Torno in Italia. There is no single rule for all places: learn these pairs as fixed expressions.
To go to or be at a person's place use da: vado dal medico (I'm going to the doctor's), sono da mia sorella (I'm at my sister's). With a person's name there is no article (da Marco); with a common noun da joins the article (da + il = dal).
For origin: essere di + city (Sono di Tirana, I'm from Tirana) and venire da + place (Vengo da Tirana, Vengo dall'Albania). With countries da takes the article: dal Marocco, dal Brasile, dalla Romania. Careful: some places take a + article: al lavoro, al mare, al supermercato (see the lesson on articulated prepositions).

Common mistakes
✗ Mio fratello lavora in Casablanca.→ Mio fratello lavora a Casablanca.
In Spanish (en), Portuguese (em), Arabic (fī) and Albanian (në) there is one word for both cities and countries. In Italian cities take a (a Casablanca), countries and regions take in (in Marocco).
✗ Adesso vado a la farmacia.→ Adesso vado in farmacia.
In Spanish you say voy a la farmacia and in Portuguese vou à farmácia. In Italian many shops and offices take in, with no article: in farmacia, in banca, in ufficio, in posta.
✗ Stasera vado a mia sorella.→ Stasera vado da mia sorella.
In English (to the doctor), Spanish (al médico) and Portuguese (ao médico) you use the same word for going to a place and to a person. In Italian, when you go to a person, you use da: da mia sorella, da Marco, dal medico. You hear al medico in speech, but the normal form is dal medico.
✗ Vengo di Perù.→ Vengo dal Perù.
In Spanish and Portuguese de is used both for soy de Lima and for vengo de Perú. In Italian you say sono di Lima, but vengo da: vengo da Lima, vengo dal Perù (countries take the article).
