Al, del, nel, sul, dal: preposition + article
By the end of this lesson you can join di, a, da, in, su with the article and you know when these forms are needed.
5 min · Level A2+
These forms are needed when the noun has the article, that is with a specific thing or place: nel cassetto (in the drawer), sul tavolo (on the table), alla stazione, dal dentista, l'ufficio del Comune, and with times: alle otto. In fixed expressions without an article they stay simple: in banca, in Italia. But if you say which bank, the article usually comes back: nella banca vicino a casa.
Di and da are two different prepositions. Di + article = whose it is, what it is about: la casa della signora (the lady's house), il direttore della scuola. Da + article = where you come from or whose place you go to: Torno dal lavoro (I'm coming back from work), Vado dalla dentista.
