Past tense: essere or avere?

By the end of this lesson you can choose between essere and avere in the passato prossimo of the most common verbs.

5 min · Level B1

The passato prossimo has two parts: avere or essere in the present + the past participle (ho lavorato, sono andata). Most verbs use avere: ho mangiato, ho telefonato, ho dormito.

Use essere with many verbs that express movement, a state or a change and have no object: andare, venire, arrivare, partire, tornare, uscire, entrare, stare, essere, restare, rimanere, nascere, diventare, succedere. Also use essere with piacere and costare, and with all reflexive verbs (mi sono svegliato).

Some verbs use avere when they have an object and essere when they don't: Ho finito il lavoro / Il film è finito; Ho cambiato casa / La situazione è cambiata; Ho sceso le scale / Sono scesa dall'autobus. Careful: camminare, viaggiare and ballare are movements, but they use avere: ho camminato, ho viaggiato.

Trick: after the verb, ask yourself «che cosa?» (what?). If there is an answer (ho preso... che cosa? il treno), use avere. If there isn't, look at the table: if the verb is there, use essere; if it isn't, use avere (ho dormito).

With dovere, potere and volere + another verb you usually use avere: Ho dovuto lavorare. If the second verb takes essere, both forms are correct: Sono dovuta uscire = Ho dovuto uscire.

Common mistakes

✗ Ho andato al lavoro in autobus.→ Sono andato al lavoro in autobus.

In Spanish (he ido), English (I have gone) and Romanian (am mers) the compound past has only one auxiliary, similar to avere. Portuguese speakers also often use ho every time. In Italian andare takes essere.

✗ Ho nato a Durazzo.→ Sono nato a Durazzo.

In Albanian people often say kam lindur, with kam (= ho). In Italian nascere always takes essere: sono nato, sono nata.

✗ Ieri io andato dal medico.→ Ieri sono andato dal medico.

In Arabic the past is a single word, with no auxiliary. In Italian the passato prossimo always has two parts: auxiliary + participle (sono andato). Io, on the other hand, can be left out.

✗ Mi ho iscritto al corso di italiano.→ Mi sono iscritto al corso di italiano.

In Spanish you say me he inscrito and in Portuguese me inscrevi: no essere. In Italian all reflexive verbs (with mi, ti, si, ci, vi) use essere.

✗ Sabato sono camminato due ore.→ Sabato ho camminato due ore.

Not all movement verbs use essere: camminare, viaggiare, ballare and nuotare use avere.
