The imperfetto: what it was like, what you used to do

By the end of this lesson you can form the imperfetto and use it to describe the past and talk about your old habits.

4 min · Level A2+

The imperfetto is a past tense. It is used to describe what something was like and to talk about habits, that is, what you did often: Da ragazza abitavo in campagna e andavo a scuola in bicicletta. (As a girl I lived in the countryside and went to school by bike.)

The regular forms are easy: take -re off the infinitive and add -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano (lavora-vo, prende-vo, dormi-vo, ave-vo). Essere is irregular: ero, eri, era... Fare, dire and bere use a longer stem: facevo, dicevo, bevevo.

Use the imperfetto for: descriptions (La casa era piccola, c'era un giardino); habits (Ogni estate tornavamo in Marocco); age, time, weather and feelings (Avevo vent'anni. Erano le otto. Pioveva. Ero stanco.); an action in progress (Mentre cucinavo, ascoltavo la radio).

At a counter or in a shop you can say Volevo chiedere un'informazione (I wanted to ask for some information): it is an imperfetto, but it is about now and it is very polite, like vorrei.

Common mistakes

✗ Io era stanco dopo il turno.→ Io ero stanco dopo il turno.

In Spanish (yo era) and Portuguese (eu era) io and lui have the same form. Not in Italian: io ero, lui era.

✗ Da bambino ho giocato a calcio ogni giorno.→ Da bambino giocavo a calcio ogni giorno.

In English I played can be a single fact or a habit. In Italian, for a past habit (ogni giorno, di solito, tutte le estati), use the imperfetto: giocavo. For one specific event in your childhood the passato prossimo is right: Da bambino sono caduto dalla bici. (As a child I fell off my bike.)

✗ Dieci anni fa abito in Marocco e vado al mare ogni domenica.→ Dieci anni fa abitavo in Marocco e andavo al mare ogni domenica.

In Arabic a past habit is often expressed with kāna + the present (kāna yadhhabu). That is why some learners use the Italian present. Italian needs the imperfetto: abitavo, andavo.

✗ Io e mia sorella erano molto amiche.→ Io e mia sorella eravamo molto amiche.

Io e mia sorella (my sister and I) = noi: the verb is eravamo. Erano is for loro.
