Vorrei, potrebbe, dovresti: the conditional

By the end of this lesson you can form the conditional and use it to ask politely, give advice and express wishes.

5 min · Level B1

The conditional uses the same stem as the future: parler-ò → parler-ei, sar-ò → sar-ei, vorr-ò → vorr-ei. So also avrei, andrei, farei, dovrei, verrei. Watch the two r's in vorrei and verrei.

It is used above all for: polite requests (Vorrei prenotare una visita. = If I were you, I'd ask the boss); wishes (Mi piacerebbe lavorare in un ufficio. = I'd like to work in an office).

At a counter and in formal emails the conditional makes a request polite: Voglio un appuntamento can sound rude, Vorrei un appuntamento is polite. Può ripetere? is fine too, but Potrebbe ripetere? is even more polite. With Lei use the lui/lei form: potrebbe, not potresti.

On the page

Good morning, I'd like to book an appointment with my GP.

  • Scusi, potrebbe ripetere più lentamente?

Excuse me, could you repeat that more slowly?

  • Mi potrebbe mandare il modulo per email?

Could you send me the form by email?

You've had backache for a week: you should go to the doctor.

  • Al posto tuo chiederei informazioni all'ufficio del personale.

If I were you, I'd ask the HR office for information.

  • A Lucía piacerebbe lavorare in una scuola.

Lucía would like to work in a school.

  • Sarebbe possibile cambiare il turno di sabato?

Would it be possible to change the Saturday shift?

Common mistakes

Vorrei has two r's, like the future vorrò; so does verrei (from verrò). Writing it with one r is a very common mistake: say a long r and write rr.

In Spanish (hablaría) and Portuguese (falaria) the conditional ends in -ia. In Italian, with io, it ends in -ei: parlerei, vorrei, potrei.

In Arabic people often ask for something with urīdu («I want»), and it usually does not sound rude. In Italian voglio at a counter can sound rude: use vorrei.

✗ Scusi, potresti ripetere?→ Scusi, potrebbe ripetere?

Scusi belongs to Lei, potresti to tu: don't mix them. To a clerk or to someone you don't know, say: Scusi, potrebbe...?
