Finding the right information fast

By the end of this lesson you can quickly find, in a notice, the information the question asks for.

5 min · Level A2+

In the reading test you don't have to understand every word. Usually a question asks for one piece of information. So don't translate the whole text: look for what you need.

First the question, then the text. 1) Read the question and underline the key word (quando? quanto? chi? che cosa bisogna portare?). 2) Look at the title and the shape of the text. 3) Scan for that kind of information. 4) Read that sentence carefully, and the next sentence too.

The text and the question often use different words with the same meaning. Question: Quanto costa? Text: Il servizio è gratuito. Question: Devo prendere un appuntamento? Text: È necessario prenotare. And look carefully at small words like non, solo, ma: they change the answer.

On the page

  • Il corso di nuoto è gratuito per i bambini residenti.

The swimming course is free for resident children.

  • È necessario prenotare la visita almeno due giorni prima.

You must book the appointment at least two days in advance.

  • Il laboratorio di cucina è riservato solo a chi abita nel quartiere.

The cooking workshop is only for people who live in the neighbourhood.

  • Di solito la segreteria apre alle 8, ma da luglio apre alle 9.

The school office usually opens at 8, but from July it opens at 9.

  • Per i rimborsi rivolgersi allo sportello numero 3.

For refunds, go to counter number 3.

Common mistakes

✗ Scelgo l'opzione con le stesse parole del testo.→ Scelgo l'opzione con lo stesso significato del testo.

Wrong options often copy words from the text, but they say something else. The right answer often uses different words: check the meaning of the whole sentence.

✗ Rispondo con quello che so: di solito gli uffici aprono di mattina.→ Rispondo con quello che dice il testo, anche se è diverso da quello che so.

The question checks whether you understood this text, not what you know about Italy. If something is not written in the text, it is not the answer.

✗ Trovo il primo orario e rispondo subito.→ Trovo l'orario e leggo anche la frase dopo.

The text often gives two similar pieces of information: di solito... ma in agosto...; 1,50 euro... dall'autista 2,50 euro. The right answer may be the second one.

✗ «Si prega di attendere» = si prega di partecipare.→ «Si prega di attendere» = si prega di aspettare.

In English to attend means 'to take part'; in Spanish and Portuguese atender means 'to serve, to answer'. In Italian attendere = to wait. Eventuale is tricky too: it doesn't mean 'final' like English eventual, but 'possible, if there is one'.

Check yourself

Lucía può andare allo sportello solo in agosto. Quando lo trova aperto?

Prima dell'incontro bisogna mandare le domande per email.

Youssef sale sull'autobus senza biglietto e lo compra dall'autista. Quanto paga?

In farmacia leggi: «Si prega di attendere il proprio turno». Con parole più semplici: devi ___ il tuo turno.

    In one line

Read the question first, look for that kind of information in the text, then read the sentence and the next one carefully: the right answer says the same thing in different words.
