Introducing yourself in one minute
By the end of this lesson you can introduce yourself in simple, complete sentences: name, age, where you are from, home, family and work.
5 min · Level A2+
At the start of the speaking test the examiner asks you a few questions about yourself: name, age, where you are from, where you live and since when, family, work or studies. The questions may come in a different order. Answer with a complete sentence and add one detail. You don't have to talk about private things, such as health or religion.
Remember: age with avere (ho 38 anni); something that still continues today with da (abito qui da sei anni); your job with come (lavoro come cameriera) or faccio la cameriera; where you are from with sono di + city (sono di Fès) or vengo da + country, usually with the article (vengo dal Marocco).
Prepare answers, not a text, and say them out loud in a different order. If you don't understand, ask: Scusi, può ripetere?

Common mistakes
✗ Sono 38 anni.→ Ho 38 anni.
In English you say I am 38. In Italian age takes avere: ho 38 anni.
✗ Lavoro di cameriera in un bar.→ Lavoro come cameriera in un bar.
In Spanish you say trabajo de camarera, in Portuguese often trabalho de garçonete. In Italian: lavoro come cameriera or faccio la cameriera.
✗ Abito qui per sei anni.→ Abito qui da sei anni.
In English you say for six years. For something that still continues today, Italian uses the present + da. Per is fine for something finished: ho abitato a Roma per sei anni.
✗ Io sono di Marocco.→ Vengo dal Marocco. / Sono marocchino.
In Arabic the same word, min, is used with a city and with a country; in Spanish you say soy de Marruecos, with no article. In Italian sono di goes with a city (sono di Casablanca); with a country: vengo dal Marocco or sono marocchino.
