Describing a place, a person, a photo
By the end of this lesson you can describe a photo or a place with c'è / ci sono, words for position, sembra and stare + gerund.
5 min · Level B1
To describe, go from the general to the details. First say what you see (È un mercato), then the details: who is there, where, what they are doing. At the end say what you think or what it is like for you (Anche io faccio la spesa al mercato).
For an action happening now use stare + gerund: sta leggendo, stanno aspettando. The gerund: -are → -ando; -ere and -ire → -endo (leggendo, dormendo). Careful: fare → facendo, bere → bevendo, dire → dicendo. The simple present is also fine: una signora legge = sta leggendo.
In the CELI 2 i Cittadinanza one part of the speaking test is describing photos: you choose 2 photos out of 4 and describe them.
On the page
In primo piano c'è un uomo con una giacca blu.
In the foreground there is a man in a blue jacket.
Nella sala d'attesa ci sono sei persone.
There are six people in the waiting room.
Una ragazza sta leggendo vicino alla finestra.
A girl is reading near the window.
Il bambino sembra contento: sta ridendo.
The child looks happy: he is laughing.

My kitchen is small, but very bright.
Common mistakes
✗ Nella foto ha due persone.→ Nella foto ci sono due persone.
In Portuguese you say tem duas pessoas, in Spanish hay dos personas. In Italian you don't use ha: c'è + singular, ci sono + plural.
✗ Una donna è leggendo il giornale.→ Una donna sta leggendo il giornale.
In English you say is reading, with to be. In Italian you use stare: sta leggendo. Legge il giornale is also correct.
✗ Il ragazzo sta scriviendo un messaggio.→ Il ragazzo sta scrivendo un messaggio.
In Spanish many gerunds end in -iendo (escribiendo). In Italian -ere and -ire verbs take -endo, with no i: scrivendo, leggendo.
✗ La cucina è piccolo.→ La cucina è piccola.
The adjective takes the gender and number of the noun: la cucina is feminine, so piccola; i ragazzi is masculine plural, so alti.
