Telling the story of an experience

By the end of this lesson you can tell the story of an experience in order: when, the situation, what happened, the end and how you felt.

5 min · Level B1

Imperfetto for the situation and the background: what it was like, what there was (era tardi, c'era molta gente, non conoscevo nessuno). Passato prossimo for the events that move the story forward (sono entrata, ho chiesto, ho firmato).

To link the events, don't always repeat poi: use prima, poi, dopo, a un certo punto, all'improvviso, alla fine. With a verb say dopo che + past (dopo che ho firmato); with a noun dopo + noun (dopo pranzo).

Prepare two or three short stories (your first day in Italy, a trip, a problem you solved): they work for many questions. Tell them out loud, in the past.

On the page

  • Quando sono arrivato in Italia, non parlavo italiano.

When I arrived in Italy, I didn't speak Italian.

  • C'era molta gente allo sportello e faceva caldo.

There were a lot of people at the counter and it was hot.

  • A un certo punto è andata via la luce.

At one point the power went off.

  • All'improvviso ha cominciato a piovere e siamo entrati in un bar.

Suddenly it started to rain and we went into a café.

  • Dopo che ho firmato il contratto, ho chiamato mia moglie.

After I signed the contract, I called my wife.

Common mistakes

✗ Ieri sono andato in Comune e c'è tanta gente.→ Ieri sono andato in Comune e c'era tanta gente.

Many people switch to the present halfway through a story, afraid of making mistakes. Don't mix tenses: for the situation use the imperfetto (c'era). Italians sometimes tell a whole story in the present, but the past shows better what you know.

✗ Ho uscito di casa alle sette.→ Sono uscita di casa alle sette.

In Spanish (he salido) and Romanian (am ieșit) there is only one auxiliary, similar to avere. In Italian uscire, andare and tornare take essere.

✗ Poi ho mangiato, poi sono uscito, poi ho chiamato Marco.→ Prima ho mangiato, poi sono uscito e alla fine ho chiamato Marco.

English speakers often repeat then and always translate it as poi. Poi is correct, but vary it: prima, dopo, a un certo punto, alla fine.

✗ Dopo di mangiare, sono uscito.→ Dopo che ho mangiato, sono uscito.

In Spanish (después de comer) and Portuguese (depois de comer) you have de + infinitive; Arabic and Albanian speakers also often say dopo di, like prima di. With a verb use dopo che (or dopo aver mangiato); with a noun dopo pranzo. Dopo di is fine with a pronoun: dopo di te.
