For marital status use essere: Sono sposata, Sono separato, Sono vedova. I figli means sons and daughters together: Ho tre figli, due maschi e una femmina. With mio, mia + one family member in the singular there is usually no article: mia moglie, mio suocero. In the plural there is: i miei genitori. With loro the article is always there: il loro figlio.
Words for school life: iscrivere un figlio a scuola (to enrol a child; l'iscrizione, enrolment), mangiare in mensa (to eat in the canteen), fare i compiti (to do homework), andare in gita (to go on a school trip), il colloquio con gli insegnanti (a meeting to talk about your child), la pagella (the school report with the marks), il rappresentante dei genitori (a parent who speaks for the whole class).
Trick: nipote has two meanings and the context helps: i nonni e i nipoti (grandparents and grandchildren), gli zii e i nipoti (uncles/aunts and nephews/nieces). In Spanish and Portuguese there are two words (nieto / sobrino, neto / sobrinho); in Italian only one: *nipote.
