Home: rent, bills, apartment building
By the end of this lesson you can use the words for rent, bills and the building, and you can explain a breakdown at home.
5 min · Level A2+
Useful phrases: pagare l'affitto (to pay the rent), pagare la bolletta (to pay the bill), firmare il contratto (to sign the lease), Si è rotta la caldaia (the boiler has broken), C'è una perdita d'acqua (there is a water leak), chiamare l'idraulico (to call the plumber), fare il trasloco (to move house), abitare al terzo piano (to live on the third floor). I vicini are the people who live near you.
Careful: affittare means to rent a home out or to rent one. To be clear, the person who pays says prendere in affitto: Prendo in affitto un bilocale. The owner says: Affitto il mio bilocale a una famiglia.

Common mistakes
✗ Abito al secondo piso.→ Abito al secondo piano.
In Spanish piso is a floor of the building (and in Spain also a flat). Piso does not exist in Italian: you say piano (al secondo piano) and appartamento.
✗ Ho fatto le foto della perdita con la mia camera.→ Ho fatto le foto della perdita con la mia fotocamera.
In English a camera takes photos. In Italian camera is a room (la camera da letto, the bedroom); the device is la fotocamera or la macchina fotografica.
✗ Il mio alquiler è di 600 euro al mese.→ Il mio affitto è di 600 euro al mese.
In Spanish you say alquiler, in Portuguese aluguel. In Italian the word for a home is l'affitto. For a car or a bike you usually say noleggiare (il noleggio).
✗ È arrivato il conto della luce.→ È arrivata la bolletta della luce.
In English you say bill and in Portuguese conta de luz. In Italian, for electricity, gas and water, you say la bolletta; you ask for il conto at a restaurant or a café.
