Offices and documents: form, counter, expiry date

By the end of this lesson you understand the words of an office and a form, and you can ask for what you need at the counter.

5 min · Level B1

Phrases you hear at the counter (for example at the sportello Informa-Casa, an invented office): Compili questo modulo (fill in this form), Firmi qui in fondo (sign here at the bottom), Alleghi una fotocopia del documento (attach a photocopy of the document), Conservi la ricevuta (keep the receipt). Every office has its own rules: read the instructions of that office and, if you are unsure, ask.

Ritirare = to collect something that is ready (ritirare la carta d'identità), like Spanish and Portuguese retirar. But it also means to take back, to withdraw: ritirare una domanda (to withdraw an application). The context helps you.

Common mistakes

✗ Attendo un corso di italiano il martedì sera.→ Frequento un corso di italiano il martedì sera.

In English to attend means to go to a course or a meeting. In Italian attendere means to wait (Attendere il proprio turno, wait for your turn). For a course you say frequentare; for a meeting, partecipare a.

✗ Lavoro in una firma di trasporti.→ Lavoro in un'azienda di trasporti.

In English a firm is a company. In Italian la firma is your signature (Metta la firma qui, sign here). For a company you say un'azienda or una ditta.

✗ Il mio passaporto è caducato.→ Il mio passaporto è scaduto.

In Spanish a document caduca or vence. In Italian caducare is not used: you say scadere: è scaduto (it has expired), scade il 10 marzo (it expires on 10 March).

✗ Ho rellenato il modulo e l'ho firmato.→ Ho compilato il modulo e l'ho firmato.

In Spanish you say rellenar un formulario. Rellenare does not exist in Italian: you say compilare il modulo. Riempire il modulo is also fine, more informal.
