Transport: tickets, delays, connections

By the end of this lesson you understand train and bus announcements and can say how you get around.

5 min · Level A2+

To say how you travel use in with no article: in treno, in macchina, in autobus, in bici. But you say a piedi (on foot). Con + article is also fine, especially for a specific vehicle: con il treno delle otto (on the eight o'clock train).

In announcements listen for three things: the train or line number, the time, the platform or stop. Words like ritardo (delay), soppresso (cancelled) and sciopero (strike) change everything. Perdere il treno = to miss the train.

Common mistakes

✗ Ogni sera salgo dal lavoro alle sei.→ Ogni sera esco dal lavoro alle sei.

In Spanish salir means «to go out» or «to leave». In Italian salire means to go up or to get on: salire sull'autobus. To leave a place you say uscire; for a train that leaves, partire.

✗ Scendo alla prossima parada.→ Scendo alla prossima fermata.

In Spanish people say parada, and so do people in some regions of Brazil (as well as ponto). In Italian the place where the bus stops is la fermata; la parata is a parade.

✗ Vado al lavoro a piede.→ Vado al lavoro a piedi.

In Spanish you say a pie and in Portuguese a pé, in the singular. In Italian it is always plural: a piedi. You don't say con il piede.

✗ Ogni giorno vado al lavoro nell'autobus.→ Ogni giorno vado al lavoro in autobus.

In Arabic the means of transport takes the article (bi-l-ḥāfila, «with the bus»). In Italian, to say how you travel, you use in with no article: in autobus, in treno. Nell'autobus means «inside the bus». Con l'autobus is also fine.
