Funny false friends: il burro is butter, what you put on bread (in Spanish and Portuguese burro is an animal, a donkey!). In summer, in a shop, il costume is usually a swimsuit.
Keep lo scontrino (the receipt): many shops ask for it for an exchange or a return. Each shop decides its own rules: ask at the till (Posso cambiarlo se non va bene?, can I exchange it if it doesn't fit?).

Common mistakes
✗ In edicola ho comprato un magazzino di cucina.→ In edicola ho comprato una rivista di cucina.
In English a magazine has photos and articles: in Italian it is la rivista. Il magazzino is a warehouse, the place where goods are stored.
✗ Vado alla tenda sotto casa a comprare il latte.→ Vado al negozio sotto casa a comprare il latte.
In Spanish tienda means «shop». In Italian la tenda is a curtain or a tent. The place where you buy things is il negozio.
✗ Questa maglia è piccola: la voglio ritornare.→ Questa maglia è piccola: la voglio restituire.
In English to return works for people and for things. In Italian ritornare usually means to go back to a place (ritorno a casa). For something you bought you say restituire or fare un reso; to get another one, cambiare.
✗ Quanto costa queste scarpe?→ Quanto costano queste scarpe?
The verb agrees with the thing that costs: questa maglia → costa; queste scarpe → costano.

In one line
At the till you get lo scontrino and il resto; for something that isn't right the verbs are cambiare (exchange) or restituire (return), not ritornare; you buy una rivista, not un magazzino.
