Civic life: rules, recycling, rights

By the end of this lesson you understand the words for living together, waste and neighbourhood life, and some basic words of the Constitution.

5 min · Level B1

Waste rules change from one Comune to another: days, bin colours, what goes together (in some towns plastic and cans go together, in others they don't). Read your Comune's instructions.

Some sure facts: the Italian Constitution has been in force since 1 January 1948; 2 June is the Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day). The Republic is made up of Comuni, Province, Città metropolitane, Regioni and the State; there are 20 Regioni. According to the Constitution, all adult citizens, men and women, vote, and the vote is personal, equal, free and secret.

On the page

In our town separate waste collection is done door to door.

On Tuesday evenings Youssef takes out the paper bin.

The rules of our building ask for quiet after 10 p.m.

Priya got a library card and borrowed two books.

On Saturday there's the neighbourhood party in the square: the parents' association is making the cakes.

The Constitution says that the vote is personal, equal, free and secret.

Common mistakes

✗ Ogni sera porto giù la basura.→ Ogni sera porto giù la spazzatura.

In Spanish you say basura (and in Portuguese lixo). In Italian you say la spazzatura or i rifiuti; rifiuti is the word on signs and in the Comune's notices.

In English educated means you have studied a lot: in Italian that is istruito. Educato means polite, well-mannered (like Spanish and Portuguese educado).

In Portuguese cidadão, cidadania and in Spanish ciudadano, ciudadanía there are no double letters. In Italian there are two t's: cittadino, cittadina, cittadinanza.

✗ Il sabato faccio volontario in biblioteca.→ Il sabato faccio volontariato in biblioteca.

Il volontario is the person (volunteer); the activity is il volontariato (volunteering). You say faccio volontariato or faccio il volontario.
