The exam email: understand the task, plan, write
By the end of this lesson you can read the task, make a plan and write an email that answers all the points.
5 min · Level B1
1) Read the task: who are you writing to? What happened? Which points must you cover? Number the points. 2) Make a plan: greeting, why you are writing, a short paragraph for each point, request or conclusion, final greeting. 3) Write following the plan. 4) Reread: are all the points there? Check verbs and accents.
CILS B1 Cittadinanza: 1 task out of 2, 80-120 words, 40 minutes. Tip: 5 minutes for the plan, 20-25 to write, 8-10 to reread. All the points and a clear purpose (communicative effectiveness) are worth 3 points out of 12.
CELI 2 i Cittadinanza: 4 answers of 8-15 words to a blog post, a formal email of 40-50 words and an informal message of 80-90 words.
PLIDA B1: two texts in 60 minutes, of 110-150 and 70-100 words. A text below the minimum number of words is cancelled.

Dear Mr Rossi, I am writing to ask for some information about the rent.
I would also ask you to check the light on the stairs.
Infine, potrebbe mandarmi una copia del contratto?
Finally, could you send me a copy of the contract?
Resto in attesa di una Sua risposta. Cordiali saluti, Rahim Uddin
I look forward to your reply. Kind regards, Rahim Uddin
Common mistakes
A forgotten point is a serious mistake. At the end, check the numbers in your plan.
Copying the task gives no new information. Write in your own words: days, times, reasons.
✗ Voglio cambiare gruppo. Ana Paula→ Gentile signora Ferri, ... Vorrei cambiare gruppo. ... Cordiali saluti, Ana Paula Souza
Without greetings the email sounds rude. And in a formal email vorrei is more polite than voglio.
Too short: information is missing. Too long: more mistakes. One paragraph per point shows you at once what is missing.
