Asking, complaining, apologising, proposing
By the end of this lesson you have a ready phrase, with Lei and with tu, to ask, report a problem, apologise, propose, thank and close.
5 min · Level B1
In emails and dialogues you always do the same actions: ask, report a problem, apologise, propose, thank. Learn one ready phrase for each action, with Lei and with tu: that way you write faster and make fewer mistakes.
To complain politely, say three things: what is wrong, since when, what you are asking for. Le scrivo per segnalare un problema: da tre giorni la caldaia non funziona. Potrebbe mandare un tecnico?
A short greeting, then the reason straight away. In many languages letters start with lots of greetings and good wishes; in an Italian email Gentile signora..., followed by Le scrivo perché... is enough. That way you have more words for the points of the task.

Common mistakes
✗ Vorrei sollecitare un appuntamento con il dottore.→ Vorrei chiedere un appuntamento con il dottore.
In Spanish and Portuguese solicitar means 'to ask for'. In Italian sollecitare means 'to ask again, urgently' (sollecitare una risposta). For a first request use chiedere or fare richiesta di.
✗ Guardo avanti alla Sua risposta.→ Resto in attesa di una Sua risposta.
I look forward to your reply is not translated word for word: in Italian you say Resto in attesa di una Sua risposta (with tu: Aspetto tue notizie).
✗ Gentile signor Ferri, la caldaia è rotta. Dovete ripararla subito!→ Gentile signor Ferri, Le scrivo per segnalare un problema: la caldaia non funziona. Potrebbe mandare un tecnico?
To the landlord (one person) you write with Lei, not voi. And a polite complaint asks, it doesn't order: Potrebbe...? is better than Dovete...!
✗ Gentile maestra, scrivo per dire che domani Omar non viene a scuola.→ Gentile maestra, Le scrivo perché domani Omar non potrà venire a scuola.
In English you often start with I'm writing to say.... In Italian scrivo per dire sounds cold: Le (the person you write to) is missing and dire is too vague. Start with Le scrivo perché... or with Le scrivo per + a precise verb: chiedere, segnalare, avvisare.
